6. The Power of Pop: Art and Popular Culture, Jill Bain, UFV

Oct 3, 2019, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

The 1960s was an era of social, political, and cultural transformation, evidence of which was manifest in many forms, not least among these being the cultural phenomenon of Pop Art. Emerging in the 1950s in response to post-war affluence and American political hegemony, Pop Art also thumbed its nose at the "high art" gravitas of Abstract Expressionism, and tapped into the increasing prominence and significance of popular culture in a global context. This illustrated slide lecture will trace the rise of Pop Art and its continued influence in the art world today.
