There is no doubt that Gothic Cathedrals form one of the distinctive features of main urban centres across Europe, and the influence of this style continues to be felt today. But what led to the development of this distinctive style, and why has it cast such a long shadow in the subsequent history of architecture? This illustrated lecture will introduce you to the development of what came to be known as the “Gothic” style, considering its motivations, meanings, and even its “modernity”.
