When social workers tell you words like “junkie” or “bum” can exacerbate homelessness or addictions, it can be easy to dismiss – what’s in a name, after all? But relationships among the homeless and the broader society’s relationship with the homeless community are key factors in homelessness. Dustin Godfrey, a journalist with Abbotsford News, has been reporting on homelessness, harm reduction and addictions, among other things, for a few years, both in Abbotsford and in his former position in Penticton. He will share some of the insights he has learned about the community from the perspective of some homeless individuals he has interviewed and those who work to support them.
