15. My Grandfather's World War One Carving in the Vimy Ridge Souterrain

Nov 10, 2020, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

My grandfather, John Cameron, a soldier in the 16th Canadian Scottish battalion, was wounded in the battle for Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917. In the days leading up to the battle his battalion was stationed in the caves and tunnels, the souterrain, under Vimy Ridge. During this period, he carved his battalion crest on the wall of a cave. This carving was featured in a History Channel documentary and was part of the 100th anniversary commemorations of Vimy in 2017. My presentation tells the story of how I learned of this carving and of my journey to France to find and see it for myself.
